“HIV is not an adjective so it does not define me. I think MARVELOUS would be more appropriate. I am not living with HIV. HIV is living with me. “

December 1st is World Aids Day so this blog post was written with the intention to encourage HIV testing and condom use. I advocate for HIV prevention because I am aware of how it changes lives. Below is the story of a woman who never thought she would be a spokesperson for HIV prevention until she was diagnosed with the disease at the tender age of 19 years old.

Marvelyn Brown is a 29- year old Black motivational speaker, advocate, author and a CEO from Tennessee. At the young age of 19 years of she was diagnosed with HIV. Since learning about her diagnosis she has chosen to live and not let HIV be a death sentence however, coming to this decision was challenging.

She wrote an autobiography called The Naked Truth: Young, Beautiful and (HIV) Positive. This book talks about her journey as a teen finding out she had HIV and how she survived it. She also discusses the challenges she faced and how she overcame those challenges. Not only did she have trouble accepting her diagnosis but her family struggled as well. As of today, Marvelyn Brown has made numerous appearances world-wide sharing her story and being an advocate for safe sex. She is currently the CEO and an Independent HIV Consultant for, Marvelous Connections, which she founded in 2006.

Brown now has an online boutique called, MARVSPIRATIONAL, with some of her own inspirational quotes. Marvelous Connections is a global HIV consulting organization. They are one of the trusted and respected advisors when it comes to reducing stigma, tackling HIV infection rates, raising HIV awareness and HIV education.

Figure out what motivates you to take control of your life. Go on your own or grab a friend to utilize some of the available resources to prevent HIV.
